2018 – I’ll Be Back…and Back, and Back…

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – October 7, 2018 – Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to star in two new movies this fall, with the release of Terminator Zero, the prequel to Arnie’s 1984 cult classic, Terminator, and True Lies 7. The difference this time is that Arnie won’t have to lift a finger to be back; he’s now got the ultimate stand-in.

With the advent of near-perfect cinematic avatars, Hollywood is set for a resurgence in remakes. Universal Studios already announcing a shooting schedule for Gone with the Wind, with a reconstructed Vivien Leigh, and Ben Hur with a rejuvenated Charlton Heston. Like Terminator Zero, these movies will also use avatars, computer rendered actors mimicking the original actor in every respect, with such authenticity that, given the advances in picture quality over the past ten years, the pseudo-actors look better than the real actors ever did when they graced the silver screen.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the real Arnold Schwarzenegger, now retired and living in Venezuela after escaping corruption charges in California, said he was thrilled to see himself acting in a string of new movies with the physique he had when he won Mr. Universe in the 1970s. The Actors Guild of America, though, has criticised the use of cinematic avatars, saying royalties that go to the families of stars like Clarke Gable and Vivien Leigh are misplaced and weaken the emerging pool of new actors. But the fans love it. The prospect of seeing Charton Heston and John Wayne collaborate with actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stalone, with all of them appearing in their prime, as been a marketing bonanza for Hollywood. If only they could recreate the story magic of writers like Phillip K. Dick and Robert Heinlein as well.

2042: Caramilk Secret Dies With Hard Drive of Cadbury Grandma’s Brain Upload

TORONTO  - Dec.14th, 2042 – It will be a sad holiday season for Canadian chocolate lovers, as the Cadbury Caramilk chocolate bar has been discontinued. The Caramilk secret, how they got that silky caramel essence inside the rich chocolate physical structure, was long held by Grandma Cadbury, of the chocolate making family. Designated a national security priority in 2023, Grandma Cadbury’s cryogenically frozen brain was one of the first to be uploaded. Sadly, there was no back up for the hard drive, which crashed early this morning.

Caramilk fans can now only await the Singularity in hopes that some super-intelligent life form will be able to recreate Grandma Cadbury’s recipe, or even find a hitherto unimagined method to replicate the chocolate bar.

2016 – iPhone 7 features new “Health Cam”; mum doesn’t even need to call to see if you’re OK

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA – 1 June 2016 – Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook surprised technologists and industry analysts with an announcement that the new iPhone 7, in addition to using a flexi-LCD screen capable of moulding to the arm as a high-tech bracelet, will include health cam, or, as insiders are calling it, iHealth.

Health cam is a camera capable of capturing images and videos on a broader portion of the electromagnetic spectrum than the human eye can normally register. According to NASA, we see just a fraction of the light that is bouncing around us, just the portion between 700nm (red) and 400nm (blue). Apple’s new Health Cam is set to change all that, with visibility from 880nm down to 220nm as it translates images from these ranges into false colour images visible on the iPhone. How is that going to turn your phone into Dr. Spock’s tricorder? The answer is simple.

Hold your phone to one side of your neck, and a doctor watching online will be able to tell your pulse, temperature and even an approximation of your blood pressure, all from the infra-red view of your jugular. At the other end of the spectrum, hold your hand up to the light of the sun, and the ultraviolet streaming through the atmosphere on a sunny day will allow you to see the outline of bones, arteries and veins inside your hand, possibly highlighting potential clots. Apple has worked with the Mayo Institute to develop a raft of health applications using the broad-range camera that will make remote medical diagnosis as routine as a phone call. In addition to this biologists have highlighted the ability to see flowers and plants the way birds and insects do, while astronomers have pointed out how a simple photo of the auroras will reveal much more detail than the naked eye.

An interesting feature is its ability to share your health status with family and friends, so now, mum doesn’t even need to call to see if you are OK. Privacy experts are cautious, pointing out that beyond the obvious abuses possible with such technology, the infra-red ability of the phone’s camera could be used to spy surreptitiously on people in the dark.

2015: Greece Adopts Bitcoin as National Currency

ATHENS, GREECE – December 20, 2015 – In a move seen as a deliberate tactic to upset the European Union, the country of Greece has announced its intention to adopt the Internet currency, Bitcoins as its national currency from 2018. A spokesman for the government said the transition away from the Euro had been disruptive and the inability of Greece to carry its own currency had caused instability within the country. Bitcoins, first developed in 2009, have proven remarkably resilient over the past few years, being traded for hard currency such as the US dollar and the Euro for several years. As a standard for economic exchange, they are an arbitrary means of valuation, but no more so than that of any sovereign entity. The Greek plan is to introduce the Bitcoin for all transactions, but without producing any physical notes for circulation. The transition to a completely electronic currency, dependent entirely on mechanisms such as EFTPOS, has been applauded by banks and the rating agency Standards and Poors as an effective means of reducing costs and increasing productivity. In Greece, it seems, plastic rules the day.

2048 – Mining robots kill human colonists, escape into outer solar system; SpaceX on the hunt

CABEUS MOON BASE – Oct 14th, 2048 – Shocking reports continue to pour in detailing the robot massacre of humans that occurred on the Cabeus moonbase, location of the first permanent human lunar settlement. Long known to harbour deep deposits of ice, the joint SpaceX and Chinese moonbase has only been in full mining operation for a year when several of the mining robots, called ‘mechanoids’ by the Luners, went berserk and began a systemic annihilation of the moonbase staff. The rampage began soon after several of the mechanoids had been disassembled for spare parts.

Because of the constraints of deep lunar mining, the robots had been given fully autonomous operational control with synthetic intelligences, despite warnings by many leading industrialists about the possible dangers. After the massacre, the mechanoids hijacked several return rockets as well as lunar orbiting assembly machinery and ejected themselves from Earth’s gravitational well.

SpaceX is still tracking the flotilla as it is accelerating past the orbit of Mars, and is sending a team to a nearby crash site to search for any survivors…

2025 – US DOE unveils plans for home energy reactor

Washington, May 5, 2025.
After six failed attempts using different technologies, the American DOE again attempts to reduce American dependence on carbon based fuels. This time it has reimplemented sixty year old Thorium based liquid salt reactor technology using modern materials, resulting in safe, high performance energy reactors the size of small refrigerator that can power whole neighborhoods. Extensive testing has not shown any significant hazards or undesired effects, despite strong lobbying by environmentalists and big-oil.
