PARIS, FRANCE – April 7th, 2017. Although genetically modified foods continue to be hotly debated, there’s no debating the merits of low-calorie chocolate, at least, not in Paris. This unusual cuisine has come about by genetically modifying seaweed, giving it a chemical signature similar to sugar, with only a fraction of the calories. Modified codfish liver oil, mixed with an artificially selected variant of sting-less blue-bottle jellyfish, provides the taste and consistency of full-cream milk, while genetically engineered celery has been given a distinct cocoa flavour, missing only the nutty oil.
Purists have thumbed their nose at this new creation, but there’s no doubting that this new chocolate is actually a healthy way to taking your daily vitamins. The chocolate is rich in Omega 3, vitamin D and vitamin E, prompting some nutritionists to label it the brain food of the future. As for this reporter, he could eat it by kilo and, as a hot chocolate drink, it is rich and full of froth. So this Easter, do your body and your mind a favour, forget about Cadbury chocolates, forget about swiss Lindt bunnies, forget about Hershey’s Easter Eggs, try the new Zchocolat and watch your waistline shrink.
Angelina Jolie was on hand in Paris for the launch today for a product that seems set to melt the market.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – October 7, 2035. Scientists at the University of San Diego have announced the successful testing of a universal translator, extending to mankind the opportunity to talk to animals. Like something out of a Dr. Dolittle movie, researchers have demonstrated the ability to read the electronic impulses of mammalian brains with a level of accuracy that allows animals to express themselves. And what do they have to say? Well, it seems it’s all in the wagging of the tail. Dogs are, not surprisingly, emotionally buoyant, the extroverts of the animal kingdom. Their effervescent emotions, so well read by anyone that’s every had a dog nudge them for a pat, represent a mind that sees the world in stereotypes. The world of dogs is one where friendship means overwhelming acceptance, while being a stranger means a threat that must be countered with violence. Cats, on the other hand, are just as lazy as they appear, thinking about little more than food, sex and sleep. Feminists have, tongue in cheek, asked if the cat scan was mistakenly mixed up with that of the average American male.

SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK – June 17th, 2032 – The Super Age has begun. A discovery that will forever change the world as we know it was unveiled this week in a quiet, nondescript building not a stone’s throw from where Edison worked his own magic more than a century ago. Researchers at the joint IBM/GE materials science lab in Schenectady, New York, unveiled results of an inexpensive room temperature semiconductor that they have been working on. Under tight security for nearly a year, the researchers have also come up with a sophisticated physics underlying the discovery allowing them to synthesize dozens of new super-materials, including room temperature superfluids and supersolids. Today the research group filed a flurry of nearly 400 core patents that cover everything from power generation and transmission to super-compact, high power motors to new chip manufacturing technologies that promise to shrink electronics by another order of magnitude, as well as new frictionless bearings.
“It is hard to overstate the impact this is going to have on the world,” said the Dr. Theodore who uncovered the key discovery. “Almost everything that came before, in technological terms, is now obsolete. We will lead the world in a rebuilding of the world’s power and transportation infrastructure and technologies, as well as revolutionize the electronics industry and many others.”
At the press conference the group demonstrated the world’s first superconducting microchip, packing nearly 5 billion Josephson junction single-electron transistors into a combined quantum computing device, a miniature loss-less energy storage device that stores 10 times more energy in a much more compact format than any existing batteries, as well as a super-compact, superconducting electric motor that will revolutionize the automobile industry. More than a hundred other inventions were on display, covering almost every industry.
Once again this small patch of Upper New York State will drive a New Industrial Revolution, re-positioning the USA as a world leader once again.

NEW YORK, March 22, 2061 - The first human test of the highly anticipated “Star Trek” transporter today failed in New York. Andrew Casparove was supposed to be delivered to Hawaii, but reports of transportation to Moscow, London, Edinburgh and Paris have been heard together with rumors of his last words being “bugger”. Researchers at Hondasoft involved in the test say their best estimate is that his body was delivered into gassy pocket within a shale deposit about two miles underground somewhere under Montana due to a system glitch. While he undoubtedly suffered a rather unpleasant end, after his demise had been confirmed his last mind back-up was reinstantiated and immediately filed a lawsuit.
The test had been rushed to coincide with the 130th birthday celebrations for Canadian actor William Shatner, who was in attendance to push the button himself.

MANAUS – December 14th, 2032 – The Brazilian pharmaceutical company Floresta Profunda, in conjunction with the Brazilian government, has released its final findings regarding its most recent drug trials started in 2027 when an unknown mushroom was discovered to have powerful anti-cancer properties. The anti-cancer agent, called Renew, was created from a non-toxic, easily processed but rare mushroom.
The discovery of the anti-cancer agent Renew started transforming the world when, in a radical move in 2029, all logging in the Amazon within the borders of Brazil was halted. The Brazilian government declared the Amazon a humanitarian treasure and a natural wonder of the world. A coalition of South American nations agreed to limit further harvesting of the forest realizing its potential was far greater than had been previously realized.
Anti-cancer agents all over the world were already taxed and in short supply due to a rash of environmental cancers from unregulated manufacturing in developing BRIC nations. China has been the hardest hit since its high growth periods of the early 2012-2016 released a variety of heavy metals, bio-active agents such as BPA and benzene from manufacturing runoff into its largest rivers. People living downstream of those factories experienced cancer at levels 800% higher than people living anywhere else in China.
In an humanitarian effort, in coordination with the Chinese government, human testing trials began in 2024. Cautious optimism had been expected by researchers whose lab trials indicated a high degree of success without the common side-effects of current cancer treatments, including bone density loss, extreme nausea, loss of appetite and cellular tissue damage. The testing of the anti-cancer agent code-named Renew began and within three months, the most positive and non-toxic anti-cancer agent ever recorded was making headlines. Testing continued until 2026. The Chinese trials offered a cure rate of 93%. Renew was capable of treating with an 80% success rate the most difficult of inoperable cancers and the drug is able to treat stage 4 metastasized cancers previously considered incurable with a better than 50% chance of success.
To stem the planetary rise of cancer, the drug, was released into the open domain, ensuring anyone who needed it would be able to get it at a very low cost. Unfortunately, the mushroom will only grow in the Amazon, so any nation desiring the mushroom would have to participate in the Cancer Accord. South American nations would provide the mushroom in exchange for being relieved of any previous long-term debt held by nations who agreed to the transfer. The United States and the UK have declined to participate having cancer populations at 11% and 14% of total population respectively. Emigration from the United States and the United Kingdom to Brazil has increased by 18% over last year with no sign of stopping.
The two scientists recorded with the initial discovery Dr. Manuel Santiago and Dr. Helena Tavener were unfortunately killed in an incident with a logging company in 2023 before all forest harvesting was halted. Both were slated to receive the Nobel Prize but died before they were able to be confirmed. Given the enormity of their discovery the awards were given to their families posthumously.
Renew is not perfect, but the side effects are relatively mild and easily treated. The treatment also seems to offer some level of resistance to cancer which is still being studied. With new protocols for reducing environmental waste runoff and toxicity standards rising, Renew stands to be a powerful tool in the fight against new lymphomas and carcinomas common to the modern world. Brazil is now poised to capitalize on the rainforest’s biodiversity with a new explosion of science, genetic engineering and pharmacology.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA – 1 June 2016 – Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook surprised technologists and industry analysts with an announcement that the new iPhone 7, in addition to using a flexi-LCD screen capable of moulding to the arm as a high-tech bracelet, will include health cam, or, as insiders are calling it, iHealth.
Health cam is a camera capable of capturing images and videos on a broader portion of the electromagnetic spectrum than the human eye can normally register. According to NASA, we see just a fraction of the light that is bouncing around us, just the portion between 700nm (red) and 400nm (blue). Apple’s new Health Cam is set to change all that, with visibility from 880nm down to 220nm as it translates images from these ranges into false colour images visible on the iPhone. How is that going to turn your phone into Dr. Spock’s tricorder? The answer is simple.
Hold your phone to one side of your neck, and a doctor watching online will be able to tell your pulse, temperature and even an approximation of your blood pressure, all from the infra-red view of your jugular. At the other end of the spectrum, hold your hand up to the light of the sun, and the ultraviolet streaming through the atmosphere on a sunny day will allow you to see the outline of bones, arteries and veins inside your hand, possibly highlighting potential clots. Apple has worked with the Mayo Institute to develop a raft of health applications using the broad-range camera that will make remote medical diagnosis as routine as a phone call. In addition to this biologists have highlighted the ability to see flowers and plants the way birds and insects do, while astronomers have pointed out how a simple photo of the auroras will reveal much more detail than the naked eye.
An interesting feature is its ability to share your health status with family and friends, so now, mum doesn’t even need to call to see if you are OK. Privacy experts are cautious, pointing out that beyond the obvious abuses possible with such technology, the infra-red ability of the phone’s camera could be used to spy surreptitiously on people in the dark.

TORONTO – Jan 1st, 2035 – It was a case of life imitating art on Tuesday when Ice Age Park opened in Toronto, Canada. Like it’s namesake, Jurassic Park, Ice Age Park has extended the marvels of genetic engineering and the ability to extract and reconstruct ancient DNA to re-create extinct creatures like the Woolly Mammoth and the North American Sabre Tooth Tiger. Unlike Jurassic Park, Ice Age Park opened without any fatalities.
Conservations around the world have applauded the park’s natural environments and eco-friendly approach, but the United States government has expressed concerns to the Canadian government about the risk of animals escaping into the wild and crossing international borders. A spokesman for the park said all possible precautions have been made to contain the animals and announced a schedule for re-creation over the next four years that includes the revival of the Dodo, the Moa, a flightless bird larger than an ostrich once found in New Zealand, and the Tasmanian Tiger.

EVERYWHERE – Jan 1st, 2063 – At precisely 4:17 pm GST yesterday, all living creatures in the cosmos experienced the blissful state of universal consciousness. Long a hypothesis of Eastern mystics and quantum physicisists, the merging of consciousness has allowed all living creatures to see, hear, taste, smell and remember all that is, all that has been, and all that will be. With all creatures recognizing their oneness, all wars ceased on Earth and elsewhere in our solar system, all pain has disappeared, and happiness and tranquility have become the universal norm. In response to the sudden sharing of information by all creatures, Congress suspended all insider trading laws as “just bloody silly”.
The preserved head-in-a-jar of Michael Moore called the change “yet another rigging of the system to favour the rich.”

GREEN BANK, WEST VIRGINIA – Feb 14th, 2022 – After waiting for eighteen months to confirm the validity of the signal, scientists at the SETI institute in Green Bank, West Virginia, have announced what they believe are signs of the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life. Retired astronomer and long-time SETI researcher, Seth Shostak, was among those involved in the initial discovery and said keeping this information contained to just a handful of scientists during the rigorous investigation has been the toughest challenge in his life. From the first day, he wanted to shout out to the world about the discovery, but after at least seven other false-positives, prudence demanded silence. After ruling out any artificial origins and conducting a detailed analysis of the signal over a year and a half, the team announced the discovery at a press conference outside the gates of the United Nations this morning.
The signal, itself, is chaotic and irregular, occurring in what scientists call The Waterhole section of the electromagnetic spectrum, a quiet patch for naturally occurring cosmic radio waves, making it ideal for interstellar communication. The signal emanates from an unlikely location, a small, previously unnamed star on the fringe of the Cygnus X molecular cloud, some six thousand light years from Earth. Scientists have resisted giving the star a name, noting that the extraterrestrials are probably not from that location and are likely to be using it as a base for interstellar mining operations in the molecular cloud, or as a scientific observation post for an apparent black hole located in that region. Scientists speculate that the information they’ve intercepted with their interstellar wiretap is probably intended for the alien’s home world. Some have gone so far as to speculate the signal direction may indicate that Earth lies on the same line-of-sight direction as the alien home world. On thing is for sure, the field of astrobiology just got a whole lot more interesting.

BRASILIA – April 12, 2038 - In an awe inspring demonstration Brazilian scientists this week unfolded the first mega scale solar sail to launch their “Cristofero” near star orbiter. Using millions of super tensile monofilaments the craft was hooked up to 2500 square miles of single atom thick reflective material. Initial acceleration numbers shown were above expectation. “At this rate we’ll reach Alpha Centauri in under sixty years,” said Alvaro Miguel de Ponte Negra, chief scientist.
Old plans for building a space elevator have resurfaced and Brazilian officials are already looking into building space port facilities near Brasilia.
